An American Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration N117UW performing flight AA-1889 from Charlotte,NC to Hartford,CT (USA), was climbing through FL210 out of Charlotte when a strong electrical odour developed on board prompting the flight crew to stop the climb and divert to Raleigh/Durham,NC (USA) for a safe landing about 19 minutes later. 9 occupants received medical attention at the airport.

The airline reported 3 crew were taken to a hospital as a precaution, 6 other occupants declined to be taken to a hospital.
