A Jet Airways Boeing 737-900, registration VT-JBZ performing flight 9W-70 from Mumbai (India) to Bangkok (Thailand) with 180 passengers and 8 crew, departed Mumbai's runway 27, however, the tail contacted the runway surface. The aircraft climbed out to safety, the crew stopped the climb at 9000 feet and returned to Mumbai for a safe landing on runway 27 about 40 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration VT-JLH reached Bangkok with a delay of 6.5 hours.

A passenger reported they did not hear any unusual sounds during takeoff and became aware of the problem only when the crew announced they were returning to Mumbai due to a possible tail strike.

The airline reported the aircraft returned due to a suspected tailstrike.
