A LATAM Chile Airbus A321-200, registration CC-BEF performing flight LA-487 from Cordoba,CD (Argentina) to Santiago (Chile) with 220 people on board, departed Cordoba's runway 36 and was climbing out when the crew stopped the climb at FL160 due to a bird strike into the left hand engine (CFM56). The aircraft returned to Cordoba for a safe landing on runway 18 about 25 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported just as the aircraft rotated there was a flash from one of the engines and some shaking as in turbulence. The captain subsequently announced that the aircraft had been going through a flock of birds and birds had been ingested by the engine.

The airline reported one of the turbines had "eaten" birds.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration CC-BEL was dispatched to Cordoba the following day and reached Santiago with a delay of 16.5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Cordoba 22 hours after landing back.
