An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N831NN performing flight AA-2183 from Austin,TX to New York JFK,NY (USA), was accelerating for takeoff from Austin's runway 17L when the crew rejected takeoff at high speed due to a burning odour on board. The aircraft slowed safely and returned to the apron.

The occurrence aircraft was able to depart after about 5 hours on the ground and reached New York with a delay of 5 hours.

The aircraft had undergone an engine wash the previous night and was on its first flight since.
