An American Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration N189UW performing flight AA-1286 from Miami,FL to Raleigh/Durham,NC (USA) with 181 passengers and 6 crew, was descending towards Raleigh/Durham when the crew reported severe turbulence had caused a number of injuries on board. The aircraft continued for a safe landing on Raleigh/Durham's runway 23R.

The airline reported three flight attendants and two passengers were taken to a hospital. The seat belt sign had been on during the turbulence encounter.

On Oct 16th 2025 the NTSB reported they have opened a class 4 investigation into the occurrence resulting in serious injuries to all 4 cabin crew and 4 passengers. The occurrence was rated an accident. A preliminary report will not be issued, a final report will be published in due time.
