Due to the unclear nature of the server crash on New Year only a temporary fix was put in place to permit the server to come up online as quickly as possible again. Subsequently analysis of all available information from log files, although not providing proof of the cause of the crash, strongly points towards an issue with the Lithium Ion battery of the RAID controller and the RAID controller (driving all the harddrives of the server) itself.
In order to avoid another unexpected crash and down time a lasting fix (replacement of RAID controller and battery) was implemented, that required that second now scheduled down time.
As analysed the RAID battery had not only degradated over its runtime of about a year, but had "inflated" itsself to become about twice as thick as a new battery in addition to running about 3-5 degrees hotter than a new battery, touching and heating neighbouring print circuits who in turn failed causing the crash on New Year's day. The crash happened only minutes after the RAID controller had initiated another "learning cycle" to measure the capacity of the battery thus discharging and recharging the battery probably bringing the temperature at the neighbouring PCBs beyond critical limits.
