A Skymark Boeing 737-800, registration JA73NT performing flight BC-732 from Sapporo to Tokyo Haneda (Japan) with 163 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing through FL140 when a passenger's smartphone battery, stowed in his carry on luggage stored underneath the seat in front of him, began to emit smoke prompting the flight crew to stop the climb and return to Sapporo's Chitose Airport, while cabin crew cooled the battery down. The aircraft landed safely back on Chitose's runway 01L about 30 minutes after departure. Two cabin crew received minor injuries (burns).

The flight was cancelled.

The airline reported a passenger's carry on luggage emitted smoke about 10 minutes after departure prompting the flight crew to return to Sapporo.

Japan's Ministry of Transport reported that 2 cabin crew received minor burns to their hands while cooling the battery down. The battery had been stowed in a bag placed underneath the seat in front, but emitted heat and smoke about 10 minutes into the flight.
