A Skymark Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration JA73AB performing flight BC-505 from Fukuoka to Okinawa (Japan) with 142 people on board, was climbing through about FL120 out of Fukuoka when the crew received indications of the left engine (CFM56) malfunctioning. The crew stopped the climb at about 13,000 feet, shut the engine down and returned to Fukuoka for a safe landing about 35 minutes after departure.

Japan's Ministry of Transport reported the left engine malfunctioned and was shut down.
