A Swiss Global Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration HB-JHI performing flight LX-18 from Zurich (Switzerland) to Newark,NJ (USA) with 233 passengers, was enroute at FL360 about 220nm west of Shannon (Ireland) about to enter Oceanic Airspace when the crew decided to turn around and return to Zurich due to a higher #1 engine (Trent 772) oil consumption than normal. The aircraft descended to FL290 for the return. Later the crew needed to reduce the #1 engine thrust to idle, the aircraft drifted down to FL210/FL220 for the return and landed safely on Zurich's runway 16 about 130 minutes after turning around. Emergency services attending the aircraft requested the #1 engine to be shut for inspection and advised a tow tractor was ready, while the crew indicated they would appreciate a two engine taxi to the apron. The aircraft stopped on the runway, the crew shut the engines down for inspection by emergency services.

The flight was cancelled.

The airline reported a higher than normal oil consumption prompted the return to Zurich. After landing the engine was examined, however, no oil leak was found, the engine is being further examined and repaired. The passengers were taken to hotels and rebooked onto other flights the next day.
