An Expressjet Embraer ERJ-145 on behalf of United, registration N13538 performing flight EV-4296/UA-4296 from Houston Intercontinental,TX to Wichita,KS (USA) with 52 people on board, was descending towards Wichita when the crew reported smoke in the cockpit and advised they would be able to vacate the runway and wanted to be checked out by emergency services on the taxiway. The aircraft continued for a safe landing on Wichita Midcontinent Airport's runway 19R.

A passenger reported the captain announced they had just a bit of smoke in the cockpit and wanted everyone prepared just in case, they would be received by emergency services.

Another passenger reported hearing a grinding noise and a thud.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground in Wichita for about 20 hours, then resumed service.
