A United Boeing 757-300, registration N75861 performing flight UA-1196 from Honolulu,HI to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was climbing out of Honululu when the crew stopped the climb at FL220 due to an unidentifyable smell on board and returned to Honolulu for a safe landing on runway 08L about 40 minutes after departure.

The passengers disembarked, maintenance staff and crew took the aircraft for some ground runs of the engines. The aircraft returned to the gate, boarded the passengers again and departed a second time about 5:25 hours after the first departure, the crew however levelled off again at FL250 due to the same unidentifyable smell and returned to Honolulu again for a safe landing on runway 08L about 50 minutes after second departure.

The flight was subsequently cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

A passenger reported the captain announced there was some smell in the back of the cabin which required them to return to Honolulu for safety reasons. The passengers were asked to return to the gate, the aircraft subsequently was pushed back and taxied around the airport before returning to the gate. The captain then advised that the test runs were successful, all checklists had been processed and the aircraft was ready to go. Passengers boarded the aircraft again, however, during the climb the same smell re-occurred, the captain announced they were again returning to Honolulu due to the persistent smell. After landing the aircraft taxied to a gate, flights UA-1579 and UA-1690, both flights to Los Angeles, parked at the adjacent gates, the passengers to Los Angeles were asked to simply walk over to these two flights, their luggage was moved onto UA-1690. The passengers to Los Angeles thus arrived in Los Angeles with a delay of 10 and 11 hours. Passengers not bound for final destination Los Angeles were rebooked onto other flights.
