A Gol Linhas Aereas Boeing 737-800, registration PR-GGL performing flight G3-1620 from Recife,PE to Fortaleza,CE (Brazil), was in the initial climb out of Recife's runway 18 when the crew stopped the climb at FL070 due to a right hand engine (CFM56) problem and decided to return to Recife for a safe landing on runway 18 about 25 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration PR-GGN reached Fortaleza as flight G3-9004 with a delay of 6 hours.

Passengers reported the right hand engine emitted two loud bangs and streaks of flame.

The airline reported there was a "technical limitation" to the right hand engine prompting a precautionary return. There had been no fire and no "explosions".
