A UPS McDonnell Douglas MD-11, registration N291UP performing freight flight 5X-213 from Louisville,KY (USA) to Cologne/Bonn (Germany) with 4 crew, was enroute at FL330 about 200nm eastnortheast of Halifax,NS (Canada) when the crew reported they suspected a fuel leak and requested to divert to Halifax. The aircraft descended to 16,000 feet, entered a hold to burn off fuel for about 30 minutes and landed safely on Halifax's runway 23 about 80 minutes after turning around.

The airline reported there was a technical problem with the fuel gauges creating the impression of a possible fuel leak.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Halifax about 8 hours after landing.

On May 4th 2016 the Canadian TSB reported the crew received a "Fuel Check Used" message. Maintenance determined there was an indication problem with the #2 main fuel quantity.
