An Air Canada Airbus A319-100, registration C-GITP performing flight AC-822 (dep Apr 8th) from Saint John's,NL (Canada) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute at FL330 over the Atlantic Ocean about 240nm east of Saint John's when the crew decided to turn around and return to Saint John's due to a hydraulic failure. The aircraft descended to FL310 and was cleared back to Saint John's but aborted the approach to Saint John's at 6000 feet MSL due to weather. The crew subsequently decided to divert to Toronto,ON (Canada), climbed the aircraft to FL360 and landed safely in Toronto about 3:20 hours after aborting the approach to Saint John's and about 4.5 hours after departure from Saint John's.

A passenger reported the crew announced a failure which rendered them no longer ETOPS capable. Later the crew indicated they could not land in Saint John's as the weather had deteriorated below minima, they were now diverting to Toronto.
