An American Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration N758AN performing flight AA-61 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) to Tokyo Narita (Japan), was enroute at FL300 about 160nm northwest of Albuquerque,NM (USA) when the crew decided to return to Dallas Ft. Worth, turned around, descended the aircraft to FL250 and dumped fuel. The aircraft landed safely back on Dallas Ft. Worth's runway 18R about 2 hours after departure.

A replacement Boeing 777-200 registration N772AN departed three hours after landing and reached Tokyo with a delay of 5.5 hours.

A passenger reported the captain announced one of three instruments had failed, they could not proceed over open waters and therefore needed to return to Dallas.
