A Lufthansa Airbus A380-800, registration D-AIMJ performing flight LH-456 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 501 passengers and 24 crew, was on final approach to Los Angeles' runway 24R descending through about 4000 feet about 12nm before the runway threshold when the crew observed an object passing over their aircraft in an estimated distance of about 200 feet vertically. Without evasive maneouver the crew continued for a safe landing on runway 24R. The crew maintained routine communication all time.

The airline confirmed the crew sighted an unknown object, presumably a drone, while descending through about 1500 meters (5000 feet) about 22km (11.8nm) before touchdown. The crew did not need to fly an evasive maneouver. The FAA is investigating what object may have been involved.
