An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N9401W performing flight AA-2428 from Raleigh/Durham,NC to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) with 98 passengers and 5 crew, was enroute at FL310 about 90nm west of Raleigh/Durham when the crew reported a possible problem with one of the engines (JT8D) and decided to divert to Charlotte,NC (USA), where the aircraft landed safely about 25 minutes later.

The airline reported an indicator light in the cockpit suggested a possible mechanical issue.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.
