An Air Canada Boeing 787-800, registration C-GHPV performing flight AC-84 (dep Oct 24th 2015) from Toronto,ON (Canada) to Tel Aviv (Israel) with 246 passengers and 11 crew, was on approach to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport in bad weather when the aircraft received a lightning strike prompting the crew to abort the approach at about 3500 feet and divert to Paphos (Cyprus). The aircraft climbed to FL260 enroute to Cyprus and landed safely in Paphos about 50 minutes after aborting the approach to Tel Aviv.

A first examination revealed evidence of a lightning strike requiring further examinations.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Paphos about 39 hours after landing.

A passenger reported that the aircraft received damage to the left wingtip. The passenger heard flight attendants discussing that at the time of the lightning strike on the turbulent approach to Tel Aviv the rear door alarms activated and required a reset, following the lightning strike the rear lavatories flushed randomly.

A replacement Boeing 787-800 registration C-GHPY was dispatched to Paphos as flight AC-2084, continued the flight to Tel Aviv and delivered the passengers to their destination with a delay of 31 hours.
