A United Boeing 747-400, registration N104UA performing flight UA-869 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Hong Kong (China), was enroute at FL300 about 350nm southeast of Anchorage,AK (USA) and about 1400nm northnorthwest of San Franciso when the crew noticed fuel quantity indications making them suspect a fuel leak. The crew decided to return to San Francisco where the aircraft landed safely about 3:10 hours later, emergency services checked the aircraft for a possible fuel leak without finding any leakage.

Passengers reported the captain announced they were using more fuel than expected, they were not sure they would make it to Hong Kong and therefore decided to turn back to San Francisco.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration N119UA reached Hong Kong with a delay of 26 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground about 36 hours after landing.
