A World Atlantic Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N802WA performing flight K8-802 from Guatemala City (Guatemala) to Miami,FL (USA), was climbing out of Guatemala City's runway 02 when the left hand engine (JT8D) emitted a loud bang and failed, a fire warning activated. The crew shut the engine down, activated the fire suppression and returned to Guatemala City for a safe landing on runway 20 about 10 minutes after departure. The crew inquired whether any fire was visible advising the fire indication had extinguished, tower confirmed there was no fire or smoke visible while emergency services were driving down the runway to follow and inspect the aircraft.

Emergency services reported that the engine ejected parts in Guatemala City's zone 9, located just north of the aerodrome, engine debris fell onto private property in that area.

The aircraft had delivered deportees from the USA to Guatemala and was to return to its home base.
