An American Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N835AW performing flight AA-618 from Phoenix,AZ to Baltimore,MD (USA) with 85 passengers, was enroute at FL370 about 250nm northeast of Phoenix when the captain became ill and felt he would not be able to carry on to destination. The crew therefore decided to return to Phoenix, where the aircraft landed safely about 45 minutes later.

The occurrence aircraft flown by a replacement crew reached Baltimore with a delay of 5 hours.

The airline confirmed the captain began to feel ill and felt he would not be able to carry on for 4 hours to complete the flight, the crew therefore returned as a precaution.
