Monarch A321 enroute on Aug 27th 2015, two small lavatory fires

A Monarch Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration G-OZBI performing flight ZB-472 from Birmingham,EN (UK) to Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) with 194 passengers and 7 crew, was enroute when a fire was detected in a lavatory. Cabin crew was able to extinguish the fire and the flight was continued. Another fire started and was again extinguished by cabin crew in time. The flight continued to Sharm el Sheikh for a safe landing about 5 hours after departure.

The airline reported that there were no injuries, the aircraft however was unservicable due to the fires and unable to perform the return flight ZB-473. The flight needed to be postponed to the next day, the passengers were taken to hotels.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration G-ZBAI positioned to Sharm el Sheikh the following day and reached Birmingham with a delay of 20 hours.

West Midlands Police (UK) reported that an investigation into the occurrence has been opened after two small fires are believed to have been started deliberately by a passenger. No arrest has been made so far.

The occurrence aircraft was able to position back to Birmingham after 24 hours on the ground in Sharm el Sheikh.

On Mar 10th 2017 a male passenger (46) was found guilty to have set both fires and was sentenced to serve 4.5 years in jail by a British Court in Birmingham,EN (UK). On May 26th 2017 a court of appeal increased the sentence to 9.5 years in jail.
