An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N975TW performing flight AA-1270 from Phoenix,AZ to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) with 140 people on board, was enroute at FL330 about 220nm south of Rapid City,SD when the crew decided to shut an engine down as a precaution, drifted down to FL200 and diverted to Rapid City where the aircraft landed safely about 45 minutes later.

A replacement MD-83 departed the following day and reached Chicago with a delay of 19.5 hours.
