A Republic Airlines de Havilland Dash 8-400 on behalf of United, registration N356NG performing flight YX-3880/UA-3880 from Newark,NJ to Burlington,VT (USA) with 71 passengers and 4 crew, was climbing through 17,000 feet out of Newark when the crew reported the left hand engine (PW150) needed to be shut down. The crew diverted to Hartford,CT (USA) advising they needed to stop on the runway, requested a bus for the passengers to be taken to the terminal, and performed a safe landing on runway 24 about 20 minutes later. The aircraft came to a stop on intersection of runways 24 and 15 effectively closing the aerodrome for about 30 minutes until passengers had deplaned and the aircraft was towed off the runway.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.
