An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N399AN performing flight AA-203 from Porto Alegre,RS (Brazil) to Miami,FL (USA) with 185 passengers and 11 crew, was climbing out of Porto Alegre's runway 11 when the crew requested to stop their climb at 5000 feet reporting a hydraulic system malfunction. After clearance to maintain 6000 feet the crew levelled off at 6000 feet, worked the checklists and returned to Porto Alegre for a safe landing on runway 11 about 20 minutes after departure.

The aircraft had departed with a delay of about 12 hours due to a hold up in Curitiba (the previous leg), the flight was cancelled after the return, the passengers were rebooked onto the next day's flight.

The airline reported a "maintenance problem".

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Porto Alegre about 29 hours after landing back.
