An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N399AN performing flight AA-86 from Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) to London Heathrow,EN (UK) with 221 people on board, was enroute at FL330 about 130nm south of Halifax,NS (Canada) when the crew reported hydraulic problems and decided to divert to New York's JFK Airport. On approach to JFK the crew advised they had lost all hydraulic fluid from the left hand side, requested an ILS approach to runway 31L indicating they were overweight and might be landing at some higher than normal speed but expected a normal landing. The aircraft landed safely on runway 31L about 90 minutes after the onset of trouble.

A replacement Boeing 767-300 registration N385AM reached London with a delay of 4.5 hours.
