An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N185AN performing flight AA-922 from La Paz to Santa Cruz (Bolivia) with 148 passengers, was climbing out of La Paz's runway 28 when the crew stopped the climb at about 17000 feet and returned to La Paz due to a blown tyre. The aircraft landed safely back on runway 28 about 30 minutes after departure. The aircraft sustained damage beyond the blown tyre.

The airport reported the aircraft was arriving from Lima when upon arrival it blew a tyre, the aircraft was then to continue to Santa Cruz and Miami.

The aircraft however arrived directly from Miami, there was no flight planned to Lima or from Lima to La Paz. Radar data show the aircraft departed La Paz for the flight to Santa Cruz but returned to La Paz's El Alto Airport.
