A South African Airlink Avro RJ-85 on behalf of South African Airways, registration ZS-ASZ performing flight 4Z-8732/SA-8732 from Pietermaritzburg to Johannesburg (South Africa), was climbing out of Pietermaritzburg when the crew could not retract the landing gear and decided to return to Pietermaritzburg. Upon approach to Pietermaritzburg the crew encountered an unsafe gear indication and decided to divert to Durban (South Africa) about 40nm southeast of Pietermaritzburg, performed a low approach to Durban's King Shaka Airport to have the gear inspected from the ground, the crew prepared the cabin for a possible gear collapse and instructed the passengers to assume the brace position for landing, and landed safely at King Shaka Airport.

On Oct 2nd 2014 South Africa's Civil Aviation Authority indicated in their August list of occurrences that the crew selected the gear up, the gear lever moving into the up position, but the gear did not retract at all. An investigation into the incident is in progress.
