PIA A313 at Peshawar on Jun 24th 2014, aircraft under gun fire on final approach

A PIA Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A310-300, registration AP-BGN performing flight PK-756 from Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) to Peshawar (Pakistan) with 178 passengers and 12 crew, was on short final to Peshawar's runway 35 at about 22:30L (17:30Z), descending through about 300 feet AGL, when the aircraft was hit by a number of bullets, the bullets penetrating the fuselage belly at the right hand side and entering the cabin. A female passenger was hit in her head and received fatal injuries, the purser received serious injuries and another flight attendant minor injuries. The crew continued for a safe landing on the runway. Both injured flight attendants are in hospital care.

The airport of Peshawar was closed for about 9 hours.

The airline reported the aircraft was about 3.5nm from the airport (approximate height on a 3 degree glideslope would be 1100 feet AGL) when about 10 bullets hit the aircraft. The female passenger in seat 59J was fatally injured, a flight attendant was hit by three bullets and is in critical condition, a second flight attendant also received injuries.

On Jun 25th the airline added that the aircraft will be flown to Karachi for repairs and is going to resume service.

The flight attendant receiving minor injuries reported the aircraft was descending near Landi Akhon Ahmed when the bullets hit the aircraft.

On Jun 25th 2014 Peshawar's Police reported the aircraft was aimed at with a submachine gun from a bridge in Masho Khel, about 4.5nm south of the aerodrome, the perpetrators subsequently fled into tribal area. Earlier the police had reported the aircraft was being shot at from University Road in Tahkal, just outside the airport's northern perimeter.

On Jun 28th 2014 Peshawar's Police reported a heavy machine gun with imported high quality ammunition including tracers had been used to target the aircraft.

AP-BGN in the meantime has been ferried to Karachi and underwent repairs. The aircraft resumed service on Jun 28th.
