A Swiss European Airlines Avro RJ-100, registration HB-IYQ performing flight LX-487 from London City,EN (UK) to Basel/Mulhouse (Switzerland/France) with 82 passengers and 4 crew, was in the initial climb out of City Airport's runway 09, when the outboard right hand engine (LF507 #4) emitted bangs and streaks of flames. The crew declared emergency, stopped the climb at 5000 feet, shut the engine down and diverted to London Stansted Airport for a safe landing on runway 04 about 30 minutes after departure.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled.

The airline confirmed there were problems with the #4 engine, the aircraft diverted safely to Stansted Airport. The passengers were bussed to London's Heathrow Airport and rebooked onto a flight from Heathrow.
