A United Boeing 757-200, registration N539UA performing flight UA-284 from San Francisco,CA to San Diego,CA (USA), was enroute at FL200 north of Los Angeles, when the crew declared emergency and decided to divert to Los Angeles. They slowed down early advising ATC when they were about 80 track miles out, that they were at 200 KIAS and needed some time to get the leading edge slats out. The aircraft landed safely on runway 25R about 30 minutes after leaving FL200.

The FAA reported an engine (PW2037) problem as cause of the diversion.
