The airport was closed for about 40 minutes until emergency services declared the aircraft safe, the occupants disembarked normally via stairs, and the aircraft was towed off the runway.
A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration D-AKNN reached Catania with a delay of 6.5 hours.
The incident aircraft returned to Cologne (Germany) as positioning flight 4U-6905 after about 4.5 hours on the ground.
