An observer on the ground said, the aircraft was climbing out of OR Tambo Airport with the main gear retracted, the nose gear however was still down.
A passenger reported the crew indicated hydraulic problems. Another passenger reported the crew announced a green hydraulic failure which prevented them from retracting the landing gear.
The airline confirmed mechanical trouble.
A replacement Airbus A340-600 registration ZS-SNG reached Cape Town with a delay of 4.5 hours.
