A SAA South African Airways Airbus A340-600, registration ZS-SNB performing flight SA-337 from Johannesburg to Cape Town (South Africa), was in the initial climb out of Jo'burgs runway 03L when the nose gear did not retract due to a hydraulic problem. The crew worked the checklists and stopped the climb at FL170 when the problem could not be resolved. The aircraft returned to Johannesburg for a safe landing on runway 03L about 50 minutes after departure.

An observer on the ground said, the aircraft was climbing out of OR Tambo Airport with the main gear retracted, the nose gear however was still down.

A passenger reported the crew indicated hydraulic problems. Another passenger reported the crew announced a green hydraulic failure which prevented them from retracting the landing gear.

The airline confirmed mechanical trouble.

A replacement Airbus A340-600 registration ZS-SNG reached Cape Town with a delay of 4.5 hours.
