A Sky Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration CC-AHC performing flight H2-803 from Lima (Peru) to Antofagasta (Chile), was climbing through about FL220 out of Lima's runway 33 when the right hand engine (CFM56) emitted a loud bang and streaks of flames. The crew stopped the climb at FL230, shut the engine down and returned to Lima for a safe landing on runway 15 about 25 minutes after departure.

Passengers reported the right hand engine emitted a huge bang and streaks of flames, the aircraft shuddered and all lights in -the cabin went out for about 5-6 seconds. The captain announced they were returning to Lima, the engine had been shut down.

A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration CC-AIY reached the ultimate destination Santiago (Chile) following the scheduled stop in Antofagasta with a delay of 16 hours.
