An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82, registration N7525A performing flight AA-2217 from Indianapolis,IN to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) with 142 people on board, was climbing out of Indianapolis when the crew stopped the climb at about FL200 reporting the right hand engine (JT8D) had been shut down. The aircraft returned to Indianapolis for a safe landing about 15 minutes later. Emergency services reported a large fuel leak at the right hand engine despite the engine having been shut down.

A replacement MD-82 registration N955U reached Dallas with a delay of 5:20 hours.

Maintenance replaced the right hand engine's P&D valve and main oil filter and returned the aircraft to service.
