A KLM Boeing 777-200, registration PH-BQH performing flight KL-592 (dep Sep 13th) from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Amsterdam (Netherlands), was enroute at FL380 about 110nm south of Rome (Italy) when the crew detected a possible oil leak at the left hand engine (GE90) and decided to shut the engine down. The aircraft diverted to Rome's Fiumicino Airport for a safe landing on runway 16L about 35 minutes later.

The flight is currently estimated to reach Amsterdam with a delay of 24 hours.

Passengers reported they have been rebooked onto other flights.
