A Swiss European Airlines Avro RJ-100, registration HB-IYY performing flight LX-463 from London City,EN (UK) to Zurich (Switzerland) with 90 people on board, was descending towards Zurich when the crew stopped the descent at FL170 telling Zurich Radar that they had a problem with the flaps system and needed to perform a flapless landing, the crew declared PAN just in case hot brakes occurred as result of the high speed landing. The crew advised they were too heavy for a flaps 0 landing and needed to burn off fuel for at least 20 minutes. The aircraft entered a hold at FL170 to work the relevant checklists, burn off fuel, prepare the landing and have emergency services in their stand by positions. The aircraft exited the hold about 30 minutes later with 1700 kg of fuel remaining, declined an instruction for a further hold by Zurich Approach advising they had burned so much fuel that any further delay would put them below final fuel reserve, and performed a safe landing on Zurich's runway 16 at about 195 knots above ground. While vacating the runway the captain reported both brakes were overheating, they would need to stop within 50 meters, tower controller replied he needed 20 meters to be very happy. The aircraft continued the 20 meters to be completely clear of the hold short line and stopped, emergency services attended the aircraft and cooled the brakes. The runway was returned to service after a runway inspection.

The airline told Corriere del Ticino that the crew became aware of the flap fault by indications in the cockpit and advised ATC of the pending high speed landing and strain on the brakes. Everything was under control however, the crew handled the situation by the book, there were no injuries or damage.
