An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82, registration N476AA performing flight AA-2096 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX to Baltimore,MD (USA), was in the initial climb out of Fort Worth's runway 17R when the crew reported they had lost the left hand engine (JT8D) due to a bird strike on departure and they needed to quickly return. The aircraft levelled off at 3000 feet and landed safely on runway 17C about 20 minutes later.

A replacement MD-82 registration N9409F reached Baltimore with a delay of 2:15 hours.

The FAA reported - mistakenly identifying the airframe as N478AA - the left hand engine received substantial damage as result of a bird strike on departure and rated the occurrence an accident.
