An American Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N188AN performing flight AA-120 from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) with 163 people on board, was enroute at FL350 about 60nm southwest of St. John's,NL (Canada) when the crew observed an unknown fluid leaking on the aircraft fuselage. The flight crew declared Mayday and returned the aircraft to JFK Airport for a safe landing about 90 minutes later.

The Canadian TSB reported that the fluid was identified to be potable water that leaked through the potable water fill valve that had not been entirely closed. The potable water was refilled, the valve completely closed and the aircraft returned to service.

The aircraft reached Paris with a delay of 4:45 hours.
