A KLM Boeing 737-900, registration PH-BXS performing flight KL-1613 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Istanbul (Turkey), was enroute at FL350 about 90nm southwest of Bucharest (Romania) when an engine (CFM56) failed forcing the crew to shut the engine down. The aircraft diverted to Bucharest's Otopeni Airport for a safe landing on runway 08R about 30 minutes later.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passengers were taken to hotels overnight.

The airline confirmed the aircraft diverted to Bucharest for technical reasons.

A passenger reported an "engine blew". Another passenger reported the engine failed, a big mess followed at the airport after which the passengers were taken to hotels overnight.

The incident aircraft remained on the ground until Jul 5th.
