An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N912NN performing flight AA-1786 from Tampa,FL to New York JFK,NY (USA), was on final approach to JFK's runway 04R and went around, tower instructed an immediate right turn onto heading 130.

A few seconds after AA-1786 announced their go-around, a Delta Airlines Boeing 747-400, registration N665US performing flight DL-172 from Tokyo Narita (Japan) to New York JFK,NY (USA), on final approach to JFK's runway 04L also announced their go-around. The aircraft was instructed to climb to 2000 feet and turn left, a right hand turn not possible due to the go-around on the parallel runway. Tower advised an Embraer was climbing out of LGA at 1400 feet and instructed an immediate right hand turn onto 060 degrees, followed by a right hand turn onto 180 degrees. The crew was subsequently vectored for an ILS approach to runway 04R and commented, they never saw the La Guardia departure having been in IMC.

A Shuttle America Embraer ERJ-170, registration N216JQ performing flight S5-5981 from New York La Guardia,NY to Jacksonville,FL (USA), departed La Guardia's runway 13 and was handed off to departure when departure control instructed the aircraft to expedite the climb through 3000 feet and make an immediate left turn to heading 040. The aircraft subsequently was turned onto heading 270 and was instructed to expedite climb through 5000 feet. The crew subsequently inquired about the other traffic, LGA departure reported the traffic had been a go-around at JFK and had been turned to where it should not have been at 2000 feet, the crew commented the other traffic had come "pretty close".

Neither crew reported a TCAS resolution advisory.

All aircraft continued for safe landings at their intended destinations.

The FAA reported, the Delta Boeing 747 and the Shuttle America Embraer ERJ-170 were already turning away from each other when they reached their closest point with 200 feet vertical and 0.5nm horizontal separation remaining. An investigation into the loss of separation has been opened.
