An Avion Express Airbus A320-200 on behalf of Cubana, registration LY-VEZ performing flight CU-986 from Havana to Santiago (Cuba), was on approach to Santiago when the crew aborted the approach due to an unsafe gear indication and entered a hold to troubleshoot the problem, however without resolving the problem. The aircraft performed a low approach to Santiago to have the gear checked from the ground which suggested all gear was down and in position despite the continuing unsafe indication. About one hour after aborting the approach the aircraft positioned for an emergency landing and managed a safe landing.
