A First Air Lockheed L-382 (civil variant of the Hercules C-130), registration C-GUSI performing flight 7F-501 from La Grande,QC to Donaldson,QC (Canada) with 4 crew on board, was climbing out La Grande when the cabin did not pressurize. The crew conducted an internal examination of the aircraft and discovered a crack to both sides of the back door and the junction with the loading ramp. Concerned with the structural integrity of the aircraft the crew declared emergency, returned to La Grande at reduced speed and landed safely about 22 minutes later.

The Canadian TSB reported a detailed examination showed no structural anomaly, however the outflow valve of the cabin pressurization system was stuck open due to frost. Although cleaning and lubrication of the valve restored normal operation of the system, a new valve will be installed as a precaution.
