An Air Berlin Airbus A330-200, registration D-ALPE performing flight AB-7430 from Dusseldorf (Germany) to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 197 passengers, was enroute at FL360 about 50nm northwest of Amsterdam (Netherlands) when the crew decided to turn around and divert to Cologne (Germany) due to problems with the navigation systems and a gross weight reading indicating overweight. The aircraft landed safely on Cologne's runway 14L about 50 minutes later.

About 2.5 hours after landing the aircraft departed for a test flight (with positioning callsign), climbed to 8000 feet and returned to Cologne landing about 40 minutes after departure.

The aircraft resumed the journey to Los Angeles another 3:15 hours later and reached Los Angeles with a delay of 7:15 hours.
