A United Airbus A320-200, registration N405UA performing flight UA-217 from Houston,TX to New York La Guardia,NY (USA) with 134 passengers and 5 crew, had just left cruise level 350 for step climbing about 130nm southwest of Charlotte,NC (USA) when the right hand engine (V2527) emitted a number of bangs, the crew aborted the climb, descended the aircraft initially to FL340, shut the engine down and diverted to Charlotte for a safe landing on runway 18C about 30 minutes later.

Passengers reported the right hand engine emitted a couple of bangs associated with jolts of the aircraft. They were taken to hotels over night and rebooked onto other flights.
