A United Airbus A320-200, registration N405UA performing flight UA-2005 from Sacramento,CA to Denver,CO (USA) with 113 people on board, departed Sacramento's runway 34R when the crew stopped the climb at about 8000 feet reporting a bird strike into the right hand engine (V2527), the engine needed to be shut down. The aircraft returned to Sacramento for a safe landing on runway 34R about 15 minutes after departure.

Passengers reported they were told a goose had gone through the right hand engine, there had been a loud bang and a flash, soon after an awful smell developed on board of the aircraft.

A replacement A320-200 registration N438UA reached Denver with a delay of 6.5 hours.
