An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N978TW performing flight AA-1589 from Newark,NJ to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) with 141 passengers and 6 crew, was enroute at FL300 about 100nm west of Washington's Dulles Airport,DC (USA) when the captain declared emergency reporting the first officer had become ill, medical assistance was required. The captain diverted the aircraft to Washington's Dulles Airport for a safe landing on runway 01C about 20 minutes later, vacated the runway and stopped, medical services were already awaiting the aircraft and boarded the aircraft on the taxiway.

The airline reported the first officer complained of being ill, the aircraft was diverted to Dulles Airport. The first officer was taken to a hospital with what appeared to be appendicitis but could be discharged in the meantime.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 reached Dallas with a delay of 9 hours.
