An Air India Airbus A320-200N, registration VT-TNY performing flight AI-2415 from Delhi to Bangalore (India) with 172 people on board, was descending towards Bangalore when the crew stopped the descent at FL240 about 30nm northeast of the airport and entered a hold for about 25 minutes. The crew subsequently decided to turn east and divert to Chennai (India), located about 140nm east of their position, due to fuel issue. The aircraft landed safely on Chennai's runway 07 about 55 minutes after entering the hold.

The airline reported the aircraft diverted due to a restriction at Bangalore, refueled in Chennai and continued to Bangalore a short while later when that restriction was lifted.

The airport reported every Monday the southern runway is closed for an hour due to maintenance work, however, the northern runway is in operation during that time, no such restriction existed therefore and all airlines are aware. The northern older runway however requires certification of the pilots, therefore crew without that certification can not land on that runway for an hour a week.
