A Gulf Air Boeing 787-9, registration A9C-FB performing flight GF-5 from Bahrain (Bahrain) to Manchester,EN (UK), was enroute at FL380 in Iraqi Airspace about 150nm northnorthwest of Kuwait City (Kuwait) when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (Trent 1000) down. The aircraft turned around, drifted down and diverted to Kuwait City for a safe landing on runway 15L about 35 minutes later.

A passenger reported the left hand engine caught fire and emitted smoke about 1.5 hours into the flight.

A replacement Boeing 787-9 registration A9C-FE was dispatched to Kuwait, resumed the flight and reached Manchester with a delay of about 25 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Kuwait about 34 hours after landing.
