An Air India Boeing 777-300, registration VT-ALO performing flight AI-185 from Delhi (India) to Vancouver,BC (Canada), was enroute at FL330 near Ketchikan,AK (USA) about 425nm northnorthwest of Vancouver when the crew received a "FIRE CARGO AFT" warning, declared Mayday, determined their nearest suitable airport was Vancouver and set direct course to Vancouver. A short time later the fire warning ceased and the crew downgraded to PAN PAN. The aircraft landed safely on Vancouver's runway 26L about one hour later.

The Canadian TSB reported the aircraft taxied clear of the runway, was inspected by emergency services with no indication of fire, and taxied to the apron. After all passengers had disembarked, emergency services opened the cargo holds, no evidence of fire, heat or smoke was found.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Vancouver for about 8 hours, then performed the return flight.
